Mercury Retrograde: Completion Season (A Survival Guide for the Calm Among Us)

Mercury retrograde begins February 26, 2026 and runs through March 20, 2026 in Pisces.

Before anyone clutches their crystals or cancels their contracts, let me say this clearly:

I love Mercury retrograde.

Yes. I am that person.

While many people brace for communication breakdowns and technology tantrums, I quietly sharpen my pencil and start looking around for unfinished business. Because for me, Mercury retrograde is not chaos season. It is completion season.

What Mercury Retrograde Actually Is

Astronomically, Mercury appears to move backward in the sky. Energetically, if you think of the universe as a web of magnetic pulls and subtle forces, retrograde feels like something tugging in reverse.

When Mercury reverses, it tends to bring things back around:

  • Old conversations
  • Unfinished projects
  • Lingering resentments
  • Contracts that stalled
  • Even old relationships

It is less about disruption and more about review.

If something reappears during retrograde, I pay attention.

Because it usually means one of two things:

  1. It wants to be completed.
  2. It wants to be consciously closed.

There is a difference.

Completion vs. Closure

Completion is internal.
Closure can be external.

Completion might look like finally finishing the book you started two years ago. It might mean having the hard conversation. It might mean signing the contract that has circled you three times already.

Closure might mean deciding, with clarity, “No. This cycle is done.”

One of my favorite Mercury retrograde stories happened almost exactly this time last year. I sold a piece of land to a tenant who had mentioned buying it within a month of moving in. That sale took nearly two years to come together. Attorneys. Delays. False starts. Frustrations.

And when did it finally close?

During Mercury retrograde.

It was not chaos. It was completion.

Yes, Communication Gets Weird

Mercury rules communication, travel, and technology. So yes:

  • Emails get misinterpreted
  • Texts land sideways
  • Flights get delayed
  • Software glitches
  • Devices act haunted

I do not panic about this.

I double-check things.

If I am signing a contract during retrograde, I read it twice. I make sure the i’s are dotted and the t’s are crossed. I do not float along assuming everything will sort itself out.

Retrograde is not a time to be sloppy. It is a time to be precise.

Unfinished Business Drains Energy

This is where my Gestalt training lights up.

Every open loop drains energy.

Unfinished conversations.
Avoided decisions.
Projects that linger in the back of your mind.

Retrograde has a way of rubbing those places.

It can feel uncomfortable. It can feel emotionally charged, especially in 2026, because all of this year’s retrogrades occur in water signs.

Water carries emotion.

Here are the 2026 Mercury retrograde dates:

  • February 26 – March 20 (Pisces)
  • June 29 – July 23 (Cancer)
  • November 24 – December 13 (Scorpio)

Pisces. Cancer. Scorpio.

Emotion, memory, attachment, depth.

If something resurfaces this year, it may have feelings attached.

That does not mean you are in danger. It means you are being invited to complete something.

What I Do During Mercury Retrograde

I reframe it.

Instead of restriction, I see productivity.

Retrograde is my “get it done” window.

Stalled projects suddenly feel workable.
Creative ideas I shelved resurface.
Mental clutter becomes obvious.

It is the perfect time to:

  • Finish what you started
  • Clear your inbox
  • Clean up lingering obligations
  • Journal through unresolved emotions
  • Work with a therapist, Gestaltist, or hypnotherapist
  • Close loops intentionally

If you have been “thinking about writing a novel” for six months and suddenly feel inspired on February 27th, that is not random.

That is a loop coming back around.

Write.

What I Do Not Do

I do not:

  • Blame retrograde for my poor boundaries
  • Avoid responsibility
  • Freeze my life because of superstition
  • Amplify chaos with anticipatory anxiety

Energy is real. Awareness is powerful. Fear is optional.

Mercury retrograde is a tool. It is not a rule.

The Deeper Invitation

My Emberwing Collective co-host Vicki approaches this from a mindfulness perspective, and I deeply respect that. For her, it is about witnessing disruption without overreacting.

For me, it is about recognizing cycles and completing them.

Between the two of us, most people will fall somewhere in that spectrum.

But here is the piece I want you to hold onto:

You do not get extra credit for suffering.

Retrograde is not here to punish you. It is not a cosmic gotcha.

It is a pause.
A review.
A moment to tidy your internal house.

If something resurfaces between February 26 and March 20, ask yourself:

Is this ready to be completed?
Or is this ready to be consciously closed?

There is power in both.

And if you move through this season with awareness instead of panic, you might find that Mercury retrograde becomes one of the most productive windows of your year.

Calm. Clear. Complete.
